Circularity

Joining forces en route to a circular economy

How we use our resources today has a great impact on climate change, environmental pollution and the deterioration of biodiversity. To secure a sustainable environment for future generations, we need to change the way we treat resources (both biobased and mineral) and products. LBP|SIGHT supports companies in their transition to a circular economy.

CIRCULARITY LADDER

In a circular economy, resources, components and products maintain their value. Products are reused, repaired or taken apart to serve as resources for new products. This way, waste is eradicated. The circularity ladder (or R-ladder) is a well-known instrument to reduce the use of new resources.

  • R1. Refuse & Rethink: Use fewer products and reconsider the necessity of each product.
  • R2. Reduce: Use fewer raw materials during the production process, or use raw materials/products more efficiently.
  • R3. Reuse: Reuse products and extend their lifespan through better product design.
  • R4. Repair, Refurbish, Remanufacture & Repurpose: Extend the lifespan of products by repairing and refurbishing them, or by giving them a new life.
  • R5. Recycle: Reuse products to create new products or resources.
  • R6. Recover: Recover energy from products or materials.

CIRCULAR CONSTRUCTION

A circular economy requires a new approach to creating buildings, areas and infrastructure. Circular construction means using as few new resources as possible, and reducing our environmental impact before, during and after construction. For buildings to succeed in this way, they need to be designed with circularity, reusability and maintenance in mind. This is why circular construction starts in the design phase.

LBP|SIGHT supports clients and construction parties in the process of circular construction. We help you to formulate clear, measurable goals. Our consultants also advise on the implementation of measurements in practice, providing insight into:

CIRCULAR INDUSTRIES

One challenge for industry parties in the circular economy is to determine the environmental impact of a production chain in its entirety, as well as how to influence it. Our circular consultants support you in mapping the environmental impact of products, services and production chains using techniques such as a life-cycle assessment (LCA). We also support industry clients in the circular design of products, including relevant business models. Using the methodology developed by CIRCO—where some of our colleagues work as trainers and experts—entrepreneurs and designers can (re)design their products, services and business models.
